Can I park on any city street?
From November 1st to March 31st, parking is not allowed on any city street between the hours of 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. This ordinance is strictly enforced and vehicles parked on the roadways during these months and hours will be cited.

What happens if my vehicle breaks down in the city?
If your vehicle breaks down, please advise us and we will not cite you. We have no way of knowing there is a problem unless you let us know.

Can I park my motorhome on my front lawn?
Recreational vehicles, i.e. motor homes, boats, trailers, etc., are not permitted to remain on the front yard of your residence for a period of time exceeding 72 hours.

Can I have a vehicle in my driveway that runs but does not have a current license plate?
No. We enforce the “junk or abandoned” vehicle ordinance. This ordinance states all vehicles must be in operating condition and have current registration and insurance.

What is the city ordinance regarding property maintenance?
The City of North Muskegon enforces the “blighting influence” property maintenance code. This means if the condition of any property has the potential to cause deterioration or devaluation of neighboring properties, it is in violation of the code. Please see Ordinances (Article IV, Sec. 10-94) for specific standards regarding property maintenance.

Can I register my bicycle with the police department?
Yes. Registering your bicycle requires your name, address, bicycle description, and the bicycle serial number. That information is kept on file at the department in the event your bicycle is lost or stolen. You will recieve a sticker and information card with your registration number. There is no fee for this service.

What is the rule for electric bicycles, motorized scooters or skateboards, go-carts, etc.?
If an object has a motor that makes it self-propelled, it meets the definition of a Motor Vehicle.  Electric bicycles, motorized scooters, motorized skateboards, go-carts, go-peds, golf carts, and kiddie cars are all motor vehicles. Unless it meets State of Michigan requirements and is registered through the Michigan Secretary of State, it is prohibited from operation on any public street. Operation on sidewalks is also prohibited.

I locked my keys in my car. Can the police department help me?
Yes. The North Muskegon Police Department is one of only a handful of departments statewide that still respond and unlock motor vehicles.

What do I have to do while walking my pets?
Pets must be walked on a leash shorter six feet in length. You are also responsible for cleaning up all potty breaks left by your pet.

Are there ordinances against barking?
Dogs will bark, but continual barking disturbs neighbors. There is an ordinace against this. If your dogs disturb your neighbors by continual barking, you can be cited.

Is there a curfew in North Muskegon?
Yes. Children ages 12 and under: 10:00 p.m. Teens ages 13 and 14: 11:00 p.m. Teens ages 15 and 16: midnight.

We are going out of town. Can I notify the police department to watch my house while we are gone?
Yes. Notify the police department of your absence by phone during business hours (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or by picking up and filling out a Security Check request form.

I was in a car accident within the North Muskegon city limits. How do I get a copy of the accident report?
Visit the police department during business hours (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). You will be asked to show your driver’s license for identification purposes. There is no fee for this report.

How do I get a copy of a non-accident police report?
You can request copies of police reports by completing a “Freedom of Information Act” form.  This form is available at the police department or North Muskegon City Hall.
